Hella Horns

Aftermarket horns provide a louder, and often more pleasant sound than stock horns. Stock horns typically have an output of 97 dB. The decibel scale is logarithmic and therefore the sound pressure doubles for every increase of 3 points, i.e. a horn with 118 dB is approximately seven times as loud as a stock horn.  

Air horns use a reed and have a trumpet like sound. The components are larger and more difficult to mount in today tightly packed engine compartments. Air horns should be mounted pointed forward and slightly down so that no water builds up in them. Diaphragm horns vibrate the diaphragm to make a more brash sound. Most Original Equipment horns are this type. Because of their smaller size, they are easier to mount.

Hella Compact Trumpet Horn Kit, 12V The output of the pair is about 110db at 6'. One horn outputs a 400 Hz tone, the other a 500 Hz tone. This horn works well in town.

HL85115

Hella Supertone Horn Kit, 12V This horn is best on open interstates where you want to warn a truck that he is about to run into you. These horns are manufactured in Germany. Lucy's Comment: D above Middle C to B: - a major sixth and a consonant interval.

Now Made in Hella's Own New Hella-managed Factory in India to the same exacting Standards as always.   The Horns are manufactured with the same tooling that was used in the German factory.   This not the previously discontinued "Indian Horn" HL85315, shown below.   It still sounds and puts out like the Supertone that it is.   The output is 118 dB and the frequencies used are still 500 mHz and 300 mHz.   The sound and durability are still there.   They are still RED.   This is still the most serious horn we offer.

Hella Supertone Horn Kit, 12V The  same size and appearance as the 85115, but the output is 113db. The low tone is the same 300Hz, but the high tone is 380Hz so the general tone is lower. These horns are made in India by a wholly owned subsidiary of Hella. Lucy's Comment: G to Aflat - dissonant - minor second therefore irritating.
