Hella's name first appeared in 1908 as a trademark for acetylene headlights. The most likely explanation for the Hella brand is attributed to Sally Windmüller: He wanted to honour his wife Helen, in short Hella, and also wanted to use the playful association between this name and the German word hell (bright).
Today Hella is considered not only the leader in vehicle lighting tecnology, but also the largest manufacturer of vehicle lighting in the world. Hella is credited with development of such breakthroughs as the first High / Low Beam Electric Headlamp, Xenon (HID) Technology, B-Xenon Headlamps, LED Headlamps and the new adaptive LED Headlamps that Audi is introducing worldwide next year (except in the USA).
